The area of winter oilseed rape has decreased over the last number of years,  with an estimated 7,700 ha harvested in 2014 from a height of just over 14,500 ha in 2012.


Oilseed rape is a high risk crop and prices have fluctuated dramatically over the last number of years.

The average yields of winter oilseed rape in Ireland are 4.2 tonnes per hectare. Winter Oilseed rape is predominantly grown as a break crop, offering an early entry for winter barley.
